There are closets full of shoeboxes packed with cancelled cheques to prove it. Many thanks to the publisher and to Net Galley for providing me with an advance reading copy.

Mar 14, ns rated it really liked it Shelves: aus , memoir , stella-prize , non-fiction. Their mother is described as manipulative, indomitable, a liar with a rich imagination, mentally unstable.

She has a toxic relationship with her husband, who is kept isolated in their quiet ranch home in Alberta, Canada. They are shut away from the world and over the years, he becomes increasingly frail, as his wife becomes increasingly unstable.

She is unexpectedly hospitalised and this prompts the author to travel to Canada from where she lives in Sydney, Australia, estranged from her parents.

She and her sister help to pick up the pieces, arranging care for their father left behind, feeling the stress these efforts put upon them.

Compelling, and made for compulsive reading. It won the Finch Memoir Prize in , and a perfect choice for memoirmarch as well! Oct 25, Tamlyn rated it it was ok.

I was so disappointed in this book after hearing an interview with the author. I kept expecting her to go a bit deeper and explain more about their background growing up and what their mum was like.

Perhaps spend a bit of time digging into how her mum was the way she was. This book c I was so disappointed in this book after hearing an interview with the author.

Apr 11, Anna Baillie-Karas rated it it was amazing. I loved this memoir. Laveau-Harvie is honest about how this has affected her, but sees the comic side and is a wonderfully warm, engaging story-teller.

A unique story but the family issues will resonate widely. Highly recommended. Apr 10, Helen Bookwoods rated it liked it Shelves: non-fiction.

I began by being extremely drawn to this account of dealing with a difficult parent in their old age.

My late mother, too, was a convincing fantasist who turned on her daughters as we tried to help her as she declined.

The incredible tension experienced when my version of things was not believed by others doctors, health workers, social workers etc etc was very well portrayed by the author when she encountered this.

However, this is not a blow-by-blow description of what happened to Harvie a I began by being extremely drawn to this account of dealing with a difficult parent in their old age.

However, this is not a blow-by-blow description of what happened to Harvie and her sister but more a work of creative non-fiction - moving back and forwards in time, withholding, immersing the reader in mood often blackly comic and the beautiful environment of the Canadian prairie where her parents had their large house, and creating the story through carefully-chosen scenes.

As the narrative progressed, I lost the connection I felt in the beginning as I realised this was not perhaps necessarily an impartial account. What is very brave about the book is that Harvie opens herself up to being seen as unsympathetic.

Perhaps I was too close to the story to be impartial myself but I had a strong negative reaction to the fate of the mother and the valorising of the father who, after all, had been complicit with his wife in her treatment of the daughters.

I think this book would be a good book group choice as it raises many, many issues. Actual Rating: 3. This has won a ton of awards and I totally get why.

The writing in this is superb. I don't think I have ever read anything that is delivered in such a detached manner but at the same time have each word so drenched in underlying pain.

In fact, I felt quite overwhelmed the whole time I was reading this that I almost felt suffocated and had to force myself to keep reading and it was only pages with short chapters.

I read to escape, so this book was confronting. My re Actual Rating: 3. Unfortunately, this book just cut a little too close to home with the aging parent dilemma and thus I am only giving this 3.

However, I want to be clear that it is not because of the writing as it is 5 star exquisite writing and every award is so richly deserved. It is due to personal reading preference and because I read to escape from reality — not have it waved in front of me in big neon lights to spark an anxiety overload.

This book is beautiful, but just pushed me a little too much in terms of dealing with parents getting older that concerns most of us when we reach our 40s and onward.

This is book 4 out of 7 that was given to me by a work colleague to read for the holidays. Not one I would have picked up on my own but that was the point of this exercise….

Having said that I now want to run at break neck speed back in to my comfort zone of trash to right the world again oh and I can call my usual reading trash because I love it If you think your parents are weird, non-caring, harsh or any other failings read this book.

It'll make them look like saints. When I read the book jacket I thought this would be a good fictional story. But it is a true story of two sisters and their relationships with their ageing mother and father in their last few years living in a remote ranch in Alberta.

The sisters had been disinherited and have had little contact over nearly 20 years. The mother is an angry, vindictive, mean spirited wom If you think your parents are weird, non-caring, harsh or any other failings read this book.

The mother is an angry, vindictive, mean spirited woman. She can also be manipulative through her charm and lying.

The father has been hen pecked to the point of being a prisoner in his own house. The author writes with a detached manner, full of black humour and a recognition she will never understand her parents.

The book does not dwell on her childhood, rather focusing on hospitalisation, the pains of old age care and the fading of ancient bodies and minds.

It's a fascinating story of one family and the challenges they handled. Apr 05, Veronica rated it really liked it Shelves: biography.

The Erratics falls squarely into this category. Most people can recount a story of a tricky family member or difficult relationship but few can assemble their thoughts with such clarity, humour and compassion - that aside few are probably recounting a relationship quite like this.

This book, paced and written so beautifully, examines how despite everything family bonds are the strongest but can also be the most damaging influence in our lives.

Jul 29, Rick Morton rated it it was amazing. An achingly beautiful, searching true story of madness and desperation and hope. I read this in two sittings.

Feb 11, Heidi rated it really liked it Shelves: read-in , slightly-disturbing , fav-non-fiction , aussie-author , want-to-read-more-from-this-author.

I held off for a while, because sometimes non-fiction is more hard work than reading a novel, but I am so glad that I finally got to it!

Laveau-Harvie indeed writes with a lot of black, self-deprecating humour and descriptions that brought both her situation as well as the setting to life for me.

However, for Vicky and her sister this premise is not only full of sadness and grief, but also danger. Having escaped a very dysfunctional family situation by moving to the other side of the world, Vicky does not cherish the prospect of having to face her mentally unstable mother after she has broken her hip in a fall.

A mother, who has long since disinherited and cut off both her daughters from her life, claiming to others either that she never had any children, or that they are dead.

From here follows the account of how Vicky and her sister try to get this tricky situation sorted in order to make sure their parents are safe and taken care of.

I have so many questions after reading this book! Vicky hints at abuse in her childhood, at the hands of a parent who sounds unstable at least, at worst fully psychotic.

And a father, who would stand by and do nothing about the situation. But we get only little snapshots of childhood memories, when I found this mystery so intriguing.

What made her mother such a monster? Was she always like this? How did the girls survive such a perilous childhood? Why did her mother speak several languages fluently and had an enormous amount of money at her disposal?

What led to both daughters being shunned be their parents? At only pages I could have easily doubled that and devoured it all. View 2 comments.

Some beautifully insightful moments but the story was told in a very detached way where it was clear there was more going on but we as readers were kept at arms length a bit.

The overriding impression I have after listening to the audiobook of The Erratics by Vicki Laveau-Harvie is an overwhelming admiration for her narration.

Her voice, intonation and way of speaking is simply mesmerising. If you listen to a sample you'll see what I mean immediately.

The Erratics is a memoir about the Canadian Australian author's ageing parents and the struggle she and her sister face when her mother ends up in hospital with a broken hip.

The author lives in Australia and unfortunate The overriding impression I have after listening to the audiobook of The Erratics by Vicki Laveau-Harvie is an overwhelming admiration for her narration.

The author lives in Australia and unfortunately her mother lives in Canada and is a nasty piece of work. After a years-long estrangement, the sisters arrive at their parent's house in Alberta to find their father has been isolated and very poorly treated.

Despite the dysfunctional family setting, Laveau-Harvie manages to include breathtaking descriptions of the landscape and environment as well as scatter dark humour and incredible insight throughout the novel.

I also enjoyed her writing. My sister carries it for me, her foot in the bear trap of our childhood unable to extricate herself no matter how hard she pulls.

She cleverly addresses the reader now and then, but I often felt confused about which point in time we were in. In addition, the reader was only ever given the tiniest of glimpses into the mistreatment the author, her sister and their father suffered at the hands of their mother.

We are never privy to the full extent of the family estrangement or even why the author's mother was the way she was. At the end of The Erratics I was left wanting more answers and disappointed about not getting them or being able to reach an understanding about the family dynamic.

Perhaps Laveau-Harvie didn't have the answers herself, or perhaps it was too painful for her to commit them to paper.

A good memoir is in many ways like an exorcism. After all, something must possess you to write so expungently of more trying times.

If you can just get it out, with the page as your confessional and the reader as your priest, then you might come out the other end more whole.

But going through this cleansing of memory and madness takes a certain amount of mettle and grit. While it is expressly clear Laveau-Harvie has a rare gift for language, she lacked the courage to use its powers to speak any A good memoir is in many ways like an exorcism.

While it is expressly clear Laveau-Harvie has a rare gift for language, she lacked the courage to use its powers to speak any actual truth. I don't know if I have ever witnessed someone so eloquently or so circuitously skirt an issue, traveling along its edge without ever getting to the center.

If Laveau-Harvie wanted to tell her story, then she would have done better to really tell it, rather than relying on guarded assumptions and cloaked asides which said much without saying anything at all.

What I can gather from her grandiloquence is only that her mother was a 'character' at best and a manipulator at worst, yet few examples of her supposed cruelty are ever given.

When they are they are quickly shut back up again before anyone can get a decent look. If you do not have the gumption to write a memoir, it is best not to write one at all or perhaps to write it privately, only as a medicine for your own soul and not as a book on a seller's shelf.

It is a tragedy of this author's talent for words that she did not use them to compose something more meaningful.
